Important Safety Information
Daptomycin (Cucicin or Cubicin) is a prescription infusion medication used to treat adult and pediatric patients with complex skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI). This is caused by the following bacteria:
- Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant isolates)
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Streptococcus agalactiae
- Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis
- Enterococcus faecalis (vancomycin-susceptible isolates only)
Daptomycin has not been studied in individuals with prosthetic valve endocarditis (cardiac valve replacement surgery). It’s also not recommended in pediatric patients younger than one year of age.
To reduce the risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria, Daptomycin should only be used to treat infections that are caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not provide effective treatment for viral infections.
What is the most important information I should know about Daptomycin?
Some patients undergoing infusion therapy with Daptomycin have reported severe allergic reactions. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience dizziness, hives, skin rash, itchiness, breathing difficulties, fast heart rate and/or a swollen face, tongue, or lips. If an allergic reaction is confirmed, discontinue treatment.
Also, discuss with your doctors about any existing allergies, and mention all additional medications you’re currently taking — including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Dosage modifications may be necessary for the following medications:
- Cholesterol-lowering drugs
Discuss your entire medical history with your healthcare provider — particularly if you have a history of kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Daptomycin is a powder that is mixed with fluid and injected intravenously. The medication is administered once per day, with the length of each infusion treatment depending on the type of infection being treated.
